BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music at Netherhall Learning Campus

This qualification is equivalent to one A level.

Course content

The Subsidiary Diploma is an extension of the Level 3 Certificate, in that it builds on the same range of skills, but stretches them to cover a broader range of applications. Units such as Music in the Community give you the opportunity to apply your skills in performance and composition to more 'real life' situations, alongside units such as Music Project which allow for the staging and production of actual live events. Assessments have a practical focus alongside more traditional research projects.

The course consists of the following units of work, totalling 60 credits.

All units are worth 10 credits each.

Mandatory unit:

  • Music Performance Techniques (Unit 23)

At least one specialist unit:

  • Solo Music Performance Skills (Unit 33)
  • Working and Developing as a Musical Ensemble (Unit 40)

Plus optional units from the following list to add up to 60 credits:

  • Aural Perception Skills (Unit 4)
  • Composing Music (Unit 7)
  • Listening Skills for Music Technologists (Unit 14)
  • Music in the Community (Unit 21)
  • Music Project (Unit 24)
  • Musical Theatre Performance (Unit 28)

AVAILABLE ACROSS YEARS 12 AND 13

Entry requirements

Grade D at GCSE or Pass at BTEC Level 2 Performing Arts/ Music or grade V (5) Music Theory and Practical.

This could lead to work in media and music industries, courses at University in music, media or performing arts, professional musician, teaching.
