Sport & Exercise Science Level 3 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

This is a level 3 in Sport and gives learners the flexibility to progress on to HND, university, employment or an apprenticeship after completion.

The Sports and Exercise Sciences pathway works closely with local universities to increase opportunities for learners to gain university positions or training and employment within the sport sector.

Using the knowledge and expertise of our highly qualified sports professionals and their wide variety of specialist areas, learners will develop a broad understanding of sport and exercise sciences and can complete enrichment opportunities related to career aspirations such as sports massage, fitness instructing and sports leadership.

Course content

The course requires the completion of 19 modules over two academic years of study. Areas of focus tailored to sport and exercise sciences are Current Issues in Sport (covering deviance such as drug abuse in sport), Fitness Testing, Training and Programming (students test and plan a training programme for clients) and Sport Psychology.

Students are closely supported by our highly qualified staff, who in addition to the BTEC Extended Diploma, also deliver our HNC / HND programmes, allowing learners the opportunity to develop their rapport with staff across level 3, 4 and 5 courses.

Entry requirements

Learners must have 5 GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in maths and / or English to complete the course, or alternatively, we have a programme for learners to complete these courses before or alongside their sport and exercise sciences course, depending on their qualifications.

Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements will be assessed on an individual basis by the Curriculum Director.

Learners are assessed using a variety of methods including assignments comprising reports, presentations, observation and practical coaching. The 19 units completed are assessed at pass, merit or distinction level to compose the Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science qualification.

Financial information

You will be required to purchase the college sports kit for use in lessons in and around the college at an approximate cost in the region of £60 - £70, although bursary funds may be available upon application to support these costs. There are several course textbooks which can be purchased at a cost of approximately £25 from new.

Future opportunities

Learners progress from the course to take up positions directly in training and employment within the sport sector or to continue their sporting studies at university, aspiring to graduate careers across the range of sport and exercise sciences, such as sports technology, sports therapy, sports psychology or PE teaching and coaching.

Within our faculty we also complete HNC/HND level 4/5 qualifications, allowing learners to continue their HE studies with members of the sports lecturing team at Warrington & Vale Royal College.
