Sports Coaching and Development Certificate at Derby College

Course description

The Sports Coaching and Development course is designed to build your skills and knowledge base in an exciting subject area. It is suitable for learners who have a keen interest in sports coaching or sports development. You will study in both practical and theoretical settings to understand advanced concepts in various aspects of sport.

This programme is designed to engage with learners who may be wishing to change their current study programme or who may be looking to return to education.

It is a Level 3 qualification where the entry requirements include English and Maths GCSE at grade C or above.

Course content

The course covers these key mandatory units:

  • Fitness Testing
  • Anatomy
  • Risk in Sport
  • Physiology
The course will also include a work placement, tutorial and the development of English and maths skills to support your main programme of study, to help your future progression and to enhance your life skills.
Work placements are expected to be found and completed from the 11th April for five full days. 

Entry requirements

You will need to have an interview and complete a screening test in maths and English. The entry requirements are four GCSEs graded between A*-C, including Maths and English.

Any achievements in BTEC Sport qualifications at Level 2 will only be considered if they are at Merit or Distinction grade.

You are expected to maintain high standards of discipline, punctuality and attendance. It is essential that you work to the deadlines set or you may face changes to, or withdrawal from, your study programme.


Learners will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit.  Learners can expect to be assessed through:

  • practical demonstration
  • logbooks and performance records
  • written reports and essays
  • presentations
  • workbooks
  • discussions and vivas

Learners will be expected to meet deadlines and work on multiple tasks throughout the year.

Further study

The course provides an excellent platform for progression to the:
• BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) (Years 2 and 3)
• University of Derby Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching


You may wish to seek employment in the sports and active leisure industry as a sports coach, sports development assistant, leisure operator or sports leader. You do not, of course, have to enter the sport and active leisure industry as the skills gained on the course are transferable to a wider range of job areas.
