Further Mathematics AS and A Level at Portsmouth College

Course description

You should take this course if you particularly enjoy, and are very good at, Mathematics.  Further Mathematics is an ideal option if you are considering higher level study in Maths, Physics or Engineering.  It is also an effective complement for courses in Business/Finance and Computing.  Further Mathematics can only be taken if you have also opted for Mathematics AS/A level.

Course content

This course presents the challenge of studying additional modules of work from the fields of Pure and Applied Mathematics.  In addition to a compulsory unit of Pure Mathematics in each year you will also study two units of Decision Mathematics and two of Statistics.

Entry requirements

You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.

Assessment

Further Mathematics is assessed through examinations, there is no coursework.

Future opportunities

The Mathematics Department is always keen to engage in local and national competitions for mathematics students.  We also link up with local universities to explore progression opportunities in mathematics and other degrees with a significant mathematics content.
