Creative Writing AS level **FEES PAYABLE** at Marlborough College

Course description

Marlborough has always had a strong tradition of Creative Writing, and we were delighted when, in 2013, the AQA examination board launched the first sixth-form qualification in this area.  We offer the course to AS-level only, for both Lower and Upper Sixth groups.

Course content

Students are encouraged to read widely, to experiment in their writing, and to reflect on their creative process. The course focuses on poetry, drama script, prose non-fiction and prose fiction.

Assessment is both through coursework and one ‘Writing on Demand’ examination.

Further information

As a Department we enthusiastically offer a wide range of co-curricular English activities, many of which are also open to students not actually following an English course in the Upper School. These include regular meetings of Contemporary Book Group and the Retro Book Group (the latter rediscovering authors who were once well-known, but who perhaps have fallen into relative and undeserved obscurity), Twentieth Century Drama Group, the Shakespeare Society, which meets once a term to read through an entire play, the Poetry Society, which hosts a series of readings by well-known and up-and-coming poets, the Literary Society, and many theatre visits. We have regular visits from writers of all kinds, and work with the town’s annual LitFest, hosting at least one major event from this festival at the College.

We also participate in a Creative Writing project with other schools in the south-west in liaison with Bath Spa University. A number of publications featuring students’ work are edited by students, and the opportunity to work with the Antiquarian and Rare Books is offered throughout the College.
