Beauty: Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up Level 3 Diploma (VTCT) at Stoke on Trent College

Course description

This course is for you if you wish to pursue a career as a theatrical make-up artist. The course leads to a specialist vocational qualification which complements the skills gained at Level 2 beauty therapy or hairdressing. It is for those wishing to pursue a career as a professional make-up artist or advance their skills to specialise in special effects make-up including prosthetics. The course is delivered in our fully equipped Make-up Studio at the Media and Performing Arts Centre at the Burslem Campus. This course will include maths, English and experience of work. You will train and complete all assessments in the specialist studio and have opportunity to attend a wide range of enrichment activities.

Course content

Entry requirements

NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification in Make-up or Beauty Therapy (advised but not essential). You will have a pre induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

Assessment

The assessment process involves the collection of e-portfolio or paper based portfolio evidence which may take the form of practical observations, questioning, online tests, projects, assignments and case studies. You will be meeting and working with members of the public and will need to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessment purposes, you will participate in experience of work.

Further information

This is a vocational course giving you the training and skills needed for employment, good punctuality and attendance is essential. To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial salons, you will be required to purchase a salon uniform and equipment which is available by mail order, an order form will be provided. The recommended salon uniform needs to be worn at all times during practical and commercial salon sessions. A professional appearance is necessary with a good standard of personal hygiene and you will need to be willing to receive and carry out the treatments for which you are training. Some courses have trips or visits which may have a cost attached. You will also have the opportunity to be entered in national skills competitions representing the College in which there have been many successful outcomes for the College. Optional units may change depending on employer requirements. When carrying out independent study and e-learning you will be able to use the College Learning Resource Centres, where you can access computers, text books DVD’s and other learning materials. You will also continue to develop your skills in maths and English as these continue to be an important element of your study.
