Sports Studies for Team Sports Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

Do you have a passion for sport? Do you want to make a difference and improve the sports performance, participation, health or fitness of people in the UK? If the answer is yes, then this could be the course for you!

The course is planned around you to get you to where you want to be. The first year of the course will contain a BTEC Diploma in Sport, and we endeavour for you to gain NGB recognised qualifications and work experience with one of our sport industry partners. All of this will help you along the road to deciding the type of role you are suited to, and prepare you for work, and maybe even move you into a job!

On completion of year one, you will be offered a variety of academic and vocational routes which include completion of your Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) alongside a Level 2 Coaching Award or a vocational route which will provide further qualifications for you to work as a coach, gym instructor, sports leader.

An added incentive to this course is that, alongside your academic programme, you'll receive the opportunity for high quality coaching provision, strength and conditioning support, nutritional advice and access to physiotherapy and sports massage services based around the team sport of your choice (it is compulsory that you join and academy or a volunteer programme when attending college) which will help to improve your performance in your sport and help you get to the top of your game and fitness levels.

This provision is built into your timetable, and is compulsory for all students by all. The college has been national champion consistently across a range of sports over the last decade, we want and expect the best - could this be you?

Course content

This course will include the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 90 credit  Diploma in sport
  • Functional Skills Maths and English if required

Your study programme based at our world class Academy for Sport will give you the opportunity to continue your academic development, not only in your course programme, we will  also enhance your employability skills and advance your functional skills.

Choose from one of our Sport Academies or the Leadership Academy

As a full-time student, while studying this course you'll have the opportunity to join one of our 14 sport academies, where you will receive the following for your chosen sport:

  • Up to nine hours of professional training every week.
  • The opportunity to compete in local, national and international competitions.
  • A personalised training and development programme and nutritional advice.
  • Our professional Academy coaches together with our strength and conditioning and physiotherapy teams will support you all the way.
  • Access to Olympic standard gym

If you prefer not to be part of the Sports Academies you will join our new and exciting Leadership Academy where you will complete various volunteering experiences as part of your study programme.

Entry requirements

You will need to have the equivalent of at least four GCSEs at grade C or above - preferably including English and maths. For vocational programmes, it would help to have a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience.

Our course will provide learning experience individually tailored for you, to prepare you for entry into higher education or directly into a sports-related job. We'll focus on developing not just your academic ability, but your vocational skills and employability.

    • This 3000 square metre facility is home to all our construction trade courses such as plumbing, electrical installation, painting & decorating and plastering with dedicated areas for each trade as well as a modern café.
