Media A Level at Tollbar Academy

Course description

Media is a means of communication, such as film, television, radio, magazines and
newspapers. It is the way we receive information, and it is important that to make
the communication effective it has to be interesting. The course will cover a range
of media but focus on newly emerging technologies, whilst also giving you the
opportunity to study a range of contemporary media. • You will study film making techniques as well as creating your own film • You will study magazine editing techniques as well as creating a double page
magazine spread.
• You will also study the theory behind design decisions such as colours, language
and music use; and understand that advertising is a real science.
Is Social Media a fad - or the biggest technological shift since the industrial revolution? • 80% of companies use social media for recruitment • 50% of the mobile internet traffic in the UK is for Facebook (imagine what this
means for bad customer experiences)
• YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world (whilst your reading this
110+ hours of video will be uploaded to YouTube)
• 24 of the 25 largest Newspapers are experiencing record declines in circulation,
due to the popularity of online media
• Social Media isn’t a fad - it’s a fundamental shift in the way we communicate!

Entry requirements

For this course it would be beneficial for you to have achieved a GCSE grade B in Ict. Also you should have achieved a grade B in English and Maths.
