Creative Studies (Crafts using Wood) NCFE Level 1 / 2 at Christ The King College

Course description

This qualification provides learners with an introduction to wood crafts and enables them to develop their technical skills and creativity.

Course content

The course aims to enable students to develop basic skills in wood crafts and provide them with underpinning knowledge of the craft process used with woods. The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to develop a portfolio of work in wood crafts, use materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely and develop an understanding of Health and Safety considerations surrounding wood crafts. Students will have the opportunity to explore a range of materials and techniques in order to develop and create products in wood. The course builds upon the knowledge gained during wood based projects at Key stage 3 and allows students the independence to develop their project work in a range of interests.


This qualification consists of 3 mandatory units:
• Unit 01 Explore available resources to develop basic wood crafts skills
• Unit 02 Explore and develop wood crafts ideas creatively
• Unit 03 Create, present and review final wood crafts item(s)
Each Unit takes 20 hours to complete.
To achieve the NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Studies (Crafts), learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes including investigation design development and making. Students will provide a portfolio of work and a final product. The work can be assessed against a variety of approaches by students and allows a good deal of flexibility. The award provides an equivalent qualification to a half GCSE, grades D to G and will lead to a level 2 course and qualification in Year 11 which is the equivalent to a half GCSE grades A to C.

Future opportunities

The Level 1 Award in Creative Studies (Crafts ), offers progression into the Level 2 course and the Level 2 Certificate, Carpentry, joinery and related trades.
