Biology at Blackfen School for Girls
This subject will appeal to students who have an interest in the living world and would like to broaden their knowledge in the area of Biology and who want to develop multiple skills including those involving practical work, producing biological drawings, analysing data and writing reports.
Biology B is split into five modules:
Module 1 – Development of practical skills in biology • Module 2 – Cells, chemicals for life, transport and gas exchange • Module 3 – Cell devision, development and disease control • Module 4 – Energy, reproduction and populations • Module 5 – Genetics, control and homeostasis
Grade BB or above in GCSE Core & Additional science or grades B in both Single Award Biology and Single Award Chemistry GCSE (BTEC Science not accepted)
There are three final examinations plus a practical endorsement.
Foundations in Biology (01) 100 marks - 2 hour 15 minutes written paper –41% of final A level
Scientific literacy in Biology (02) - 100 marks - 2 hour 15 minutes written paper-37% of final A level
Practical skills in Biology (03) 60 marks—1 hour 30 minutes -22% of final A level
Practical endorsement in biology (04)* (non exam assessment) - The assessment of practical skills is a compulsory requirement for the course. It will appear on all students’ certificates as a separately reported result, alongside the overall grade for the qualification.
Studying A level Biology can allow you to study courses in medicine, veterinary science and dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy, pharmaceutical sciences, forensic science, biomedical and biological sciences, environmental health and food sciences.
This subject is offered as a two year Linear A level course. Students will sit final exams at the end of 2 years. Students opting for this subject will be entered for an AS qualification at the end of the first year. This is a standalone qualification.
