English Literature at Cardinal Newman Catholic School

Course description

You will enjoy English Literature if you are an enthusiastic and inquisitive reader with a passion for poetry, language and drama. You will be exploring literary texts of different types and periods. You will understand how writers express their thoughts and feelings through their choice of form and language, learning how to organise and present your ideas in a clear and coherent manner. You will study works by authors from the past, such as Chaucer and Shakespeare, and from the present, such as Pinter and Larkin.

The qualities you need to succeed are an enthusiasm for reading, a readiness to discuss your own and other readers’ opinions and the ability to communicate clearly. The course is excellent preparation for a wide range of university courses such as Law, Journalism and Literature.

The equivalent of atleast five GCSEs at grade C or above
