An Introduction to Early Years, Education and Care Level 2 at Blackburn College

Course description

This one year full time course is for those who wish to work with children and young people and is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. Learners will attend college 2.5 days per week and placement for 2 days per week. This course will prepare learners to work in the childcare sector or to progress to a Level 3 qualification.

Course content

You will learn about:

  • Supporting positive behaviour
  • Children and young person’s development
  • Safeguarding
  • Understanding partnership working
  • Maths & English*

 *If you have not achieved a Grade D or above in your Maths and English language GCSEs you will be required to work towards a GCSE Grade C as part of your Study Programme.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 4 GCSEs at grade D including English Language and Maths, along with a positive school report for attendance and punctuality.


You will be assessed by written tasks, activities and practical assessments. You will also be assessed whilst on work placement.

Future opportunities

This qualification does not allow you to work with children but is a stepping stone to Level 3 Diploma or Certificate which will provide you with an excellent work experience report and reference required for progression within childcare.
