Chemistry A-level at The Netherhall School and Sixth Form Centre
Salters Chemistry builds on your experience of chemistry at GCSE. It is a very practical course and looks at a range of issues including fuels, atmosphere, metals, polymers, oceans, colour and biochemical sciences.
The course is context-led conveying the excitement of contemporary chemistry. Ideas are introduced in a spiral way with topics introduced in an early part of the course, reinforced and extended later. There is a particular emphasis on developing a wide range of practical skills and adopting a problem-solving approach to practical work.
Year 12 Units:
- Elements of Life
- Developing Fuels
- Elements from the Sea
- The Ozone Story
- What’s in a Medicine?
Year 13 Units:
- The Chemical Industry
- Polymers and Life
- Developing Metals
- Colour by Design
Practical work is carried out throughout the course and specific skills assessed for the Practical Endorsement. Other practical skills are assessed in the written papers.
The minimum requirement is 7 GCSE or equivalent passes at either grades 9-4 or grades A*-C in an appropriate range of subjects, including English at grade 4 or above.
The college will accept one BTEC at Merit level as one GCSE equivalent.
Where a student continues on to an A-Level from a GCSE subject, it is advisable for a student to have a minimum of a grade 6 or grade B.
Chemistry – requires a GCSE Grade 6 or B or above in: Maths and Chemistry or Combined Science.
3 exams at the end of Year 13 for A-level Chemistry:
Paper 1: Fundamentals of Chemistry: (2.25 hrs)
Multiple choice and structured questions
Paper 2: Chemical Literacy: (2.25 hrs)
Structured questions and extended response questions covering theory, practical skills and chemical literacy
Paper 3: Practical Skills in Chemistry: (1.5 hrs)
Questions related to theory and experimental design, analysis and interpretation of data, with a focus on the assessment of practical skills.
Non-exam Assessment: Practical Endorsement:
Teacher assessed component where candidates complete 12 practical tasks to demonstrate practical competence.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology, Physics or Maths, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more STEM-linked higher education courses.
With further training an A-level Chemistry qualification could lead to a career in a variety of professions that range from a biochemist, chemical engineer, optometrist, toxicologist or even a teacher!
