Biology (AS / A Level) at Middlesbrough College

Course description

This AS/A Level qualification provides the knowledge and skills needed to understand how the body works and the role of humans in the natural world. You will learn about the contribution of Biology to society and the impact this science will have on our future. AS: Biological molecules, enzymes; cells; mitosis immunity; digestion; heart; gas exchange; transport in plants. A2: Populations; respiration; photosynthesis; nerves; energy flow; hormones; muscles; genetics; gene technology; biodiversity.

Course content

Linear course – AS content is assessed at the end of the first year. Both AS and A2 content is assessed at the end of the second year.

Entry requirements

5 or more GCSEs at grade C or above, including Grade B in Core and Additional Science or Biology (higher tier) and grade C in Maths (higher tier) and English. If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme.


AS: two 2 hour written papers each worth 50% of AS A2: two 2 hour written papers each worth 35% of A2; one 2 hour written paper worth 30% of A2 Note that the A2 exams cover both AS and A2 content. Practical skills are endorsed separately and are completed during the course (6 practicals for AS and a further 6 practicals for A2).

Future opportunities

You can go on to study a wide range of courses at University, leading to careers in medicine, nursing, dentistry, physiotherapy, pharmacy, forestry, marine biology, veterinary science, industry and teaching. The skills which you develop by studying Biology are transferable to a huge range of careers.
