Geography AS/A Level at South Holderness Technology College

Course description

Geography is a flexible subject which is especially attractive to those who want to maintain strong links with the ‘real world’ outside the classroom. It can be classified as either an arts, science or social science subject. AS and A Level geographers have subsequently pursued many and varied careers.

It combines well with almost all other courses on offer and will allow you to develop a wide variety of marketable skills sought after by employers. You will experience a variety of teaching styles including class discussion and group work.

During the course you will be given the opportunity to do fieldwork and to collect and process data to develop your analytical skills.

Course content

• Physical themes such as rivers and coasts as well as major global topics such as plate tectonics and global warming. • Human topics such as Recent Urban Change • Population / resource conflicts at different scales -can the world continue to support a growing population? • Hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tropical storms and attempts to manage them. • Contemporary issues such as environmental management and transport development linked with the need for sustainability.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A-C grade including Maths and English

A grade B in GCSE subjects is required for most A level programmes. Please speak to the sixth form subject teacher for specific details on course entry.

Assessment

100% written examination

Future opportunities

Many students go on to study degrees in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science. Geographers are sought after in many career areas such as planning, management, journalism and environmental work.
