Course description

What will I be studying?

How the Earth works, aspects of Earth history, glaciation, climate change, formation of mountains and oceans, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, evolution of life and mass extinction, formations of rocks, minerals, gemstones and fossils.

What does this subject involve?

Field excursions, map work, experimental analysis, developing an understanding of past climates, how volcanoes and meteorites contribute to climate change and mineral resources and rock structures.

Field Trips to: Castleton, Bridlington, Lake District, one foreign trip to Iceland, Italy or another volcanic region.

 

Entry requirements

A good understanding of physical geography not necessarily from GCSE.

A grade B in Science.

Enjoy working outside the classroom

Ability to observe and solve problems

An interest in the environment

An interest in living things

An enquiring mind

 

Further information

Geologists are very much in demand. If you want to travel with your work and enjoy a challenge this could be for you. Other careers followed by geology graduates are risk assessment, museum work, journalism, pollution control, architecture, engineering, exploration geology or space research. Most girls go on to study the subject at University.
