Units Studied ‐ Year 12

Unit 1: Exploring Socialisation, Culture and Identity

This unit allows students to experiment and conduct their own research as they learn about the how cultures are formed and how socialisation has an impact on people’s lives e.g. feral children. This unit is divided into several key topics, these include:
 The formation of culture and the process of socialisation
 The role of the socialisation in the formation of identities
 Exploring research methods and the use of data

Unit 3: Family

This unit offers the students an opportunity to gain an insight into the key concepts and role of youth in society and some of the motivations behind it. The unit is divided into several key issues, these include:
 The family, social structure and social change
 The role of family in society
 Marriage, divorce and family diversity
 The impact of demographic changes on family life and diversity
 Roles, responsibilities and relationships within the family

Units Studied ‐ Year 13

Exploring Social Inequality and Indifference
This unit provides an interesting opportunity for students to study the inequality and difference in society through a variety of aspects such as Age, Gender, Class and ethnicity. Students will look at a variety of research into this topic and conduct a piece of research of their own. This unit is divided into the following key topics:
 Exploring social inequality and difference through Age, Gender, Class and Ethnicity
 Exploring sociological research on social inequality and difference
The sociology of Education or the sociology of Mass Media
 Sociology of Education
o This unit looks at the structure of the education system its role and function as well as the
education policy
 Sociology of Mass Media
o This unit looks at defining and researching, ownership and representation of social groups

Entry requirements

Grade B or above in GCSE English Language.
