Spanish AS at Warlingham School
During this course you will read and listen to authentic foreign language materials and will study aspects of the contempory society, cultural background and heritage of a country where the language is spoken. You will have the opportunities to develop your understanding and awareness of spiritual, moral, ethical, environmental, health and European issues. You will exten and develop your knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary of the foreign language and will use this to speak, write, read and listen to the language. In addition, you will learn how to: - be an effective communicator - speak and write the language in a range of different situations and for different purposes - use the language to express facts and ideas - use the language to present explanations, opinions and information. YOUTH CULTURE AND CONCERNS - Music and fashion - Technology e.g. MP3/blogs/mobile phones/internet/games) - Relationships (family/friendships/and peer pressure) - Drink, drugs, sex LIFESTYLE, HEALTH AND FITNESS - Sports and exercise - Food and diet - Health issues (e.g. smoking, skin cancer, health services) THE WORLD AROUND US: TRAVEL, TOURISM, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND THE TARGET-LANGUAGE SPEAKING WORLD - Tourist information - Weather (e.g. natural disasters, climate change) - Pollution and recycling Assessment Format Unit 1: Oral. Responding to questions; discussion 8-10 minutes 15%. Unit 2: Listening, reading and writing. 2½ hours 35%
GCSE Grade B or above in Spanish
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Spanish, which could lead you onto higher education to study Spanish, Languages or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job requiring a knowledge of Spanish or Languages such as a Teacher, Translator, or you may wish to use your Spanish to study or work over in Spain. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the travel and tourism sector. You could take this course with other advanced level course or equivalent to prepare for higher education in Spanish, Languages or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job requiring a knowledge of Spanish or Languages such as a Teacher, Translator, or you may wish to use your Spanish to study or work over in Spain. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the travel and tourism sector. Possible Careers and Higher Education Degrees in Spanish, European Studies, Business Studies with Spanish, Sciences with Spanish, Law with German. Careers in translating, travel industry, interpreting, au pair work, bi-lingual secretarial work.
