Health and Social Care BTEC level 3 Extended Certificate at St Peter's RC High School & Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The qualification is aimed at students intending to go on to further study or work in this sector. It is equivalent to one A-level.

Course content

Students will study four units covering the core content areas. Two units are examined units, one is as a portfolio and one is a report under controlled conditions.

Human Lifespan Development (exam)

This unit will develop understanding of patterns of human growth and development. You will learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and human health. You will learn the detail about a number of theories and models to explain and interpret behaviour through the human lifespan. You will explore the impact of life events, and recognise how they impact on individuals. You will study the interaction between the physical and psychological factors of the ageing process, and how this affects confidence and selfesteem, which in turn may determine how individuals will view their remaining years.

Physiological disorders and their care (portfolio)

You will learn about the signs and symptoms of physiological disorders and how they are investigated and diagnosed. You will also learn about the different types of treatment and support available for individual service users, including surgery, rehabilitation and complementary therapies. You will create a treatment plan for a service user with a specific physiological disorder. This will help you understand the treatment and support strategies involved, the contributions of different professionals and the importance of providing individualised care.

Working in Health and Social Care (exam)

This unit will help you to understand what it is like to work in the health and social care sector. You will look at maintaining the safety of individuals with health and social care needs, making sure that properly handle their personal information and preventing discrimination towards them. You will need to understand how you will be accountable both to these individuals and the regulatory bodies that represent people who work in the health and social care sector. It is necessary for you to understand how your work will be monitored when you carry out a specific role such as nurse or social worker.

Meeting Individual Support Needs (controlled conditions report)

In this unit you will learn about the values and principles of meeting care and support needs and look at some of the ethical issues that arise when personalising care. You will reflect on methods used by health professionals when you consider the importance of multiagency working in providing a package of care and support that meets all the needs of individuals. In this unit you will draw on your learning from across your programme to complete assessment tasks.

Entry requirements

The general requirement to enter St Peter's Sixth Form to study 3 A levels, is 5 GCSEs at grade C / level 4 or above including English and Mathematics. Equivalent qualifications will be taken into account.

Future opportunities

This course is theory based and is designed to support progression to employment or into Higher education, when used in conjunction with a selection of other L3 qualifications (A-levels, or equivalent).

It would also support students who choose to progress directly to employment as the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills will give successful students an advantage when applying for a range of entry level roles, industry training programmes and Higher Apprenticeships.
