Dance (BTEC National Award in Performing Arts) (optional V.A.L.P. component) at Sandown Bay Academy
This practical course has been designed to prepare students for a professional life in the performing arts sector. It will be ideal to apply for this course if you intend to study dance, or any other performing art forms at degree level. As part of this course, you will submit assignments rather than sit exams and will be assessed on your dance technique, performance, choreographic skills and dance analysis. THE COURSE WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING UNITS: Performing to an Audience, Choreographic Principles, Contemporary Dance Technique, Dance Performance and Dance Appreciation. You will need to complete a total of 5 units to pass the course.
Standard 6th form entry is 5 GCSE's A*-C, including English Language and Maths. A background in dance is desirable, though not compulsory.
POSSIBLE PROGRESSION: This BTEC course has an equivalent to an A level and therefore will assist in securing a place on a degree level course. It will also prepare you for a professional life as a performing art artist, choreographer, a dance therapist or a Dance teacher. SUGGESTED SUBJECT COMBINATIONS: You may want to consider joining the A level course in drama/music studies although any other A level/BTEC subject will be applicable. This short course offers a specialist qualification for entering employment in the performing arts or progressing onto further education such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Performing Arts or related degree programmes. You could also go onto study a relevant NVQ vocational qualification, which could be work-based. With further training, you could go into a job related to performing arts such as a choreographer or dance teacher. The course provides a work related programme of study so you could go straight into a job as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for, especially in the performing industries such as theatre.
