English Literature AS & A Level at Hove Park School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

English Literature involves the study of texts written in all the major genres. In Year 12, students will consider aspects of the genre of tragedy. This will involve the reading of a Shakespearean tragedy and a more modern play.

The second year will consider the elements of crime writing by studying three texts. The final pieces of the course will involve study of texts of the student’s own choosing, considered and analysed with reference to different theoretical and critical methods.

Entry requirements

GCSE A*-B in English Language, and (preferably) A*-C in English Literature.


The full A-level is examined through two exams – one paper of 2 hour 30 minutes, and one of 3 hours. Coursework – which accounts for 20% of the marks – consists of two essays, each of 1250-1500 words.
