Painting and Decorating Level 1 Diploma at Preston's College

Course description

This course in an ideal introduction to painting and decorating and will appeal strongly to those who either wish to pursue a career in this area or to individuals who simply would like to acquire skills in home decorating. You will soon learn new skills such as applying paint by brush and paperhanging which is now back in fashion. Many of our students enjoy learning the basics of specialist paint effects such as marbling and graining.

Course content

The course covers a range of techniques that will allow you to become a good painter and decorator. These include; preparation of surfaces and the use of primers, application of paint and methods (brush, roller and spray), types of paint, hanging wallpaper to a variety of surfaces, application of specialist finishes such as rag rolling and sponging, use of access equipment in painting and decorating (steps, ladders, scaffolds). You will also develop your communication skills and learn about the use of drawings and specifications when on site and the processes involved in the construction of buildings.

Entry requirements

A profile of mainly grade E’s at GCSE including English and maths. You must also complete an English and maths assessment, attend an interview and complete a multiple choice assessment.

Future opportunities

Preston’s College Course: Once you have completed the Level 1 Diploma in painting and decorating you can progress to Level 2.

Some students gain an Apprenticeship/employment and in this case you would return to college on a day release basis and study the Level 2 Diploma.
