Computer Science A Level at Cramlington Learning Village

Course description

Computer Science is a rapidly evolving and increasingly important field, pervasive in almost all areas of science and modern day life. Computer Science graduates are therefore in high demand across an increasingly diverse range of industries. Computer Scientists need a diverse set of practical and theoretical skills. This course provides students with a strong foundation in the critical areas of Computer Science.

Course content

Note that the information is based on the new specification by OCR. We are also evaluating the AQA course and will make a final decision later in the year. The AQA specification is very similar to the one from OCR outlined here.

You will study 3 different units over the two years.
Computer Systems (40% of final grade)
Algorithms and Programming
Programming Project

Entry requirements

5 A* - C GCSEs across a range of subjects including English and Maths. At least a B in all ICT/Computing units if you have studied ICT at GCSE or CIDA Level. An average GCSE point score of 43 or above. At least a B grade in Mathematics.

The A Level consists of three components, two of which will be externally marked question papers making up 80% of the qualification.

Computer systems (01) - 40% of total A Level. 2 hours and 30 minutes. Written paper.

Algorithms and programming (02) - 40% of total A Level. 2 hours and 30 minutes. Written paper.

Programming project (03 or 04) - 20% of total A Level. Coursework.

Future opportunities

A Level Computer Science is very highly regarded by many Universities. This course will help you to move on to degree level in many fields including Aeronautical Engineering, Computing, Science, Medicine, Mathematics and Engineering courses.
