Sport (Outdoor Adventure) - Level 3 Diploma at Middlesbrough College

Course description

This exciting and challenging course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for entry into career in outdoor adventure and outdoor education. You will study both the theoretical and practical aspects of the outdoor industry; developing your understanding of topics such as Anatomy and Physiology in Sport, Fitness Training and Programming, Leadership and looking at the purpose of outdoor and adventurous activity. Practically you will need to develop your personal and leadership skills in land-based and water-based activities including kayaking/canoeing, climbing and navigation. You will also be expected to plan, participate and review expeditions that you have undertaken on the course.

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSE’s at grade C or above which must include English, Maths and Science "If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme."

Future opportunities

On successful completion you could progress to university or enter employment in a range of outdoor related occupations. This qualification attracts up to 260 UCAS points towards entry onto a degree-level course. This course is also the perfect lead-in to jobs in the outdoor sector. Many students start their careers as outdoor instructors and work their way up to leadership roles within a few years of experience in the field. The other route that this course opens up is the opportunity to go onto teacher training course and educate others. The BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in sport and exercise sciences is designed to prepare students for higher education. The course consists of eighteen units both theoretical and practical, covering a holistic approach to sport and exercise sciences including: Anatomy, Physiology, Sports Coaching, Sports Injuries, Sports Massage, and Psychology, Nutrition and Laboratory and experimental methods. The reward being a maximum of 420 UCAS points or the equivalent of 3 A Levels, as well as studying sports science you will have the opportunity to complete your Level 1 and Level 2 CYQ fitness instructor qualifications and a variety of sports specific Level 1 qualifications. These vocational qualifications give you the option to progress straight into work if; University or into employment within the sport and leisure industry. Student who have completed the course have gone on to study degrees in; Architecture, Criminology, Sports Therapy, Sports Science, Sports Coaching, Nutrition and Psychology.
