Access to Higher Education (Science and Mathematics) at Coleg Sir Gar

Course description

  • The course is flexible and credit based allowing students to agree a programme of study to meet their individual requirements.
  • Courses are taught by friendly and experienced staff who provide support, guidance and regular feedback in personal tutorials to encourage and motivate students who may initially lack confidence in the classroom.
  • Develops mathematical skills to a high standard, under close support and guidance.

Course content

Access courses are aimed at mature students wishing to prepare for higher education. They offer a second chance to students without formal qualifications or to students wishing to change career direction. This course covers: Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics, together with Key Skills in Numeracy, Communication and ICT.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required but entry is subject to interview.


Each module will be assessed through a combination of assignments, seminars, presentations, formal essay work and group discussion. There will also be practical assessments and timed pieces of work.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete the course would be eligible to apply for HND or Degree courses in a related subject area.
