ICT - AS Level at Skinners' Academy

Course description

We are now living in the Information Age. ICT is a major element in many areas of people’s lives. In GCE Applied ICT you will: • study the role and effect of ICT in the globalised world economy today • develop advanced skills in many important software applications What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course? You would benefit most from a GCE in Applied ICT if you have one or more of the following: • five GCSEs at grade A*-C • other level 2 qualifications such as GCSE (Double Award) in Applied ICT at grades AA-CC; Intermediate GNVQ in ICT; DIDA; Edexcel BTEC First Diploma IT Practitioners You should also have an interest in developing the knowledge and skills you need to be a competent and informed ICT user and practitioner. What will I learn about on this course? In the AS units you will learn about: In the A2 units you will learn about: Unit 1 The Information Age Unit 7: Using Database Software Unit 2 The Digital Economy Unit 8 Managing ICT projects Unit 3 The Knowledge Worker Unit 10 Using Multimedia Software How will I be assessed? You will be assessed in Units 3 and 7 by assignments set by Edexcel that ask you to carry out practical, 'hands-on' tasks. You will collect evidence of your work for the other units in an eportfolio. This is designed to be viewed on screen and will showcase your achievements. It will be assessed by your teacher and moderated by Edexcel.

Entry requirements

for AS level – a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, usually with a Grade B or above in the subject to be taken at AS level or in an associated subject. for A2 level – candidates should normally have obtained a pass at AS level, preferably at grade C or above.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Information and Communication Technology, which could lead onto higher education in areas of Information and Communication Technology or more general higher education courses as the course offers skills that are useful in lots of subjects. With further training you could go into a job directly related to Information and Communication Technology such as a Computer Programmer, ICT Technician or Website Developer. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge for entering today's workforce across many industries who depend on computers and technology more generally.
