Further Mathematics A Level at Twynham School

Course description

Further Mathematics extends the topics studied in A Level Mathematics. The topics are studied to degree standard and many ideas will be explored in the first year of a Mathematics degree course.

This is a good A-level to study for students wanting to continue Mathematics at University or for students that are particularly gifted at Mathematics and have a real interest in the subject.

The course covers mostly pure Mathematics but as with the Mathematics course, there are also applied units to study as well.  All units taken must be different from the A-Level Mathematics units.

AS Level

Consists of one module in Pure Mathematics and two from Statistics, Mechanics or Decision Mathematics.

To achieve an A2 Further Mathematics qualification at the end of your second year, you will need to complete another 3 modules in addition to the ones studied for AS. These will include two modules in Pure Mathematics and another ‘applied’ module in Statistics, Mechanics or Decision Mathematics. The A level qualification will therefore consists of 6 modules in total, 3 of which will be Pure Mathematics modules.
