Business BTEC Level 2 Award at John Leggott Sixth Form College
All units count equally toward the final grade that you will be awarded. The two core units plus two optional units need to be completed to gain the Award.
- Unit 1 Enterprise in the Business World:
Understand what a business is and what it does, ranging from a sole trader in a local market to a multinational corporation selling products to millions of people all over the world. Look at a variety of business terminology and different factors that can affect a business. Examine different business models and what the responsibilities of a business owner are. Plan an idea for a realistic business start-up in your local area, based on your research, select a format and then present the business model and plan.
- Unit 2 Finance for Business:
Explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from the initial start-up costs to the ongoing daily costs. Look at the ways in which the sale of products and services generates revenue, so that you can develop your understanding of profit. Examine how businesses plan for success using the break-even point and how to prevent losses. Explore profit and cash within business success, particularly through budgeting and cash flow forecasts. Finally, look at how businesses measure success and identify areas for improvement using profit/loss accounts and balance sheets.
- Unit 3 Promoting a Brand:
Find out what it takes to build a brand and what a business has to consider when planning brand development. Investigate the importance of branding to a business, the types of branding that are available and why businesses need to review and update their brands. Explore the role of promotion within the marketing mix and what it consists of, including how businesses communicate the benefits of a product to their customers. Explore the promotional mix and what this involves and review branding methods. Think of ideas for a brand and promote your ideas using appropriate methods.
- Unit 8 Recruitment, Selection and Employment:
Introduction to the variety of job roles that exist within businesses and the various functions that are performed by individuals. Businesses use person specifications and job descriptions to ensure that they recruit the best people to fill job vacancies. You will be given the opportunity to complete these important documents for given job roles and complete an application and an interview for a specific job role. Consider how to prepare for interview and employment and the necessary steps for career planning by producing your own career development plan.
Mainly grades C and D at GCSE.
The course has one formal examination for Unit 2 in the form of a 50 minute online exam. Three units will be assessed by the completion of appropriate coursework and the classwork you produce.
You can move directly into business employment or progress to Level 3 learning.
