Child Development and Care Level 2 Award at Gateshead College

Course description

This course will give you the opportunity to gain a practical, vocational qualification that will provide you with a basic introduction to the early years sector. The course includes the knowledge and understanding of child development and well-being necessary for working with children in a variety of settings, working with children aged 0-5 years old.

Work experience

You don't need to be working working or undertaking a practical placement to study for this qualification; however a placement can be arranged if you are work ready.

Maths and English

We look at what you can do when you join us and then we’ll put a programme together which best meets your needs and aspirations.

This might mean working towards a pre-GCSE qualification or towards an A*-C grade in GCSE English and maths and, if you’ve already achieved this, you’ll continue to build on your skills in these subjects.

Entry requirements

  • 2 GCSEs grade A–C including English language plus maths GCSE grade D or above.


Your progress and knowledge will be assessed via two assessment tasks and a multiple choice paper.

Future opportunities

If you successfully complete this course, you could progress onto the following courses:

  • Level 2 Certificate and Diploma in Child Care and Education    

    And further progression to:

  • Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Child Care and Education

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
