Media, Art and Design - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography at Wakefield College

Course description

Develop a career in photography with this two year, practical course leading to a qualification that is the equivalent of three A Levels. You will learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations and activities. Whether you want to progress to higher education or go straight into employment, this course will give you the skills you need.

Course content

What you will study

The course is made up of 18 units - five core units then a range of specialist units that Wakefield College have selected to give you the best possible basis on which to develop a photographic career. These specialist units enable you to study particular aspects of photography in greater depth. We vision your future to be a digital one, as the majority of image-makers use this technology, however, darkroom or "wet" photography forms a fundamental pathway for those who would wish to work in this media.

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. You will need a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why maths and English are so important, whatever your field of study.


Your Course Structure

Classroom: 25%; Practical: 75% (including residential and educational visits to galleries and museums)


How you will learn

Delivery of the units will be via both classroom based lectures and practical "hands-on" tuition, together with an equal amount of time for you to work independently and explore image making and techniques in capture, process and manipulation. There will be assignments to complete with individual deadlines and you will receive tuition to enable you to understand the requirements of the tasks.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4) including English and Maths
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4)
Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and
Grade D (new grade 3) or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other

L2 Diploma or equivalent at Merit Grade, plus GCSE English or Maths at grade C (or new grade 4), plus a L1 or L2 English or Maths




You will be assessed by your tutors and an external examiner each time you complete a unit at regular intervals throughout the programme. Each unit can be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. In addition you will work towards a portfolio of evidence that will comprise evidence generated by your photographic studies. This portfolio attracts points that add to your overall performance and attractiveness to Higher Education establishments.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Most students will undertake this programme as a stepping stone to Higher Education and there is a wide range of Higher National Diplomas and Degree studies available such as HND Photography, BA Photographic Studies, Foundation Degree Fine Art, BA Art or Design Studies. You could progress to a HND in Photography here at Wakefield College.  Options for your progression will be discussed as part of your tutorial sessions and applications will form part of the second year of the programme for those wishing to apply.

Career opportunities

This qualification is designed to give you a sound introduction to the subject and skills to transfer into the professional world. Employment at this stage in your photographic career will normally be that of an assistant to a photographer or a freelance photographer in your own right. The options within the world of professional image making are many and varied, and will be discussed with you during the course. Specialist areas include: press photography, social photography, commercial photography, art-based image making and creative application of images in multi-media and cultural projects.
