Art and Design BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School

Course description

The Art & Design BTEC National Extended Diploma is an applied general qualification which is equivalent to 3 A-Levels. The main difference between the Double and Triple award is the total number of mandatory and optional units studied over two years.

Students will study 13 units, including 7 mandatory units and a further 6 optional units as part of the Extended Diploma. A broader range of optional units are available to students opting for this course compared with the Diploma, including more specialised Photography, Graphics, Textiles, Fine Art, Fashion and Interactive Design units.

Course content

Mandatory units:

  • Developing & Realising Creative Intentions
  • The Creative Process
  • Visual Recording and Communication
  • Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design
  • Managing a Client Brief
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
  • Developing an Art and Design portfolio

Optional units (students choose 6 optional units from a total of 37):

  • Photography Units: Studio, location, digital, non-digital, etc
  • Graphics Units: Typography, branding, graphic illustration, etc
  • Interactive Design Units: Conceptual art for games, animation, web design, etc
  • Fine Art Units: Painting, drawing, printmaking, etc
  • 3D Design Craft Units: Model making, 3D techniques, etc
  • Textiles Units: Woven, constructed textiles, surface design, digital textiles
  • Fashion Units: Fashion promotion, Fashion design, pattern development, etc

 

Entry requirements

To follow a Vocational programme students should have achieved 5 grade C’s at GCSE, normally including English and Mathematics (at grade 5).
 
All students must have a good record of conduct and be comfortable with the values and the ethos of the academy. All students will be interviewed and references sought for external candidates.
 
Progress from Year 12 to Year 13 is not automatic and is dependent upon a successful first year and a pass grade in the progression exams taken at the end of Year 12.

Unit externally assessed - 3 hours - portfolio of work:

  • Visual Recording and Communication

Unit externally assessed - 5 hours - written submission

  • Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design

Unit externally assessed - 5 hours - portfolio of work:

  • Developing & Realising Creative Intentions
  • Managing a Client Brief

Unit internally assessed - portfolio of work:

  • The Creative Process
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
  • Developing an Art and Design portfolio
  • all of the optional units
