Year 12 Content
In the AS year of the course, you will complete two units –
Unit 1: Portfolio of Creative Skills
In this unit students are given the opportunity to develop their creative, technical and practical skills through a series of product investigation, design and manufacturing activities.
Students will produce one portfolio with three distinct sections which will demonstrate their creativity and flair when investigating, designing and making products.
Unit 2: Design & Technology in Practice
In this unit students will develop a knowledge and understanding of a wider range of materials and processes used in the field of design and technology. It is important that students learn about material and processes so that they can develop a greater understanding of how products can be designed and manufactured. Students will also learn about industrial and commercial practices and the importance of quality checks and the health and safety issues that have to be considered at all times.
Year 13 Content
Unit 3: Designing for the future
Unit 4: Commercial Design
The A2 year is a synoptic course that reflects and incorporates much of what has been learnt in the previous year. It is also built around a Design and Make Project unit and Theory Based exam unit. This final project allows you to identify your own market niche for a product, and work in tandem with an external organisation to complete a new innovative product. Theory work also follows on from the previous year, and students are required to use their past knowledge to consider how industrial designs are put together.
Unit 1: Internally set and marked by the Academy and externally moderated by the exam board.
60% of AS – 30% Total A-level
Unit 2: 1 hour 30 minute written exam set by the exam board.
40% of AS – 20% Total A-level
