Course description

Why choose English Literature?

English Literature is a subject which is exceptionally well received by universities and employers alike. It is one of the core ‘facilitating’ subjects favoured by the best universities in the country. Good performance at A level provides a very sound base for a surprising number of degrees and professions and helps to develop analytical as well as creative skills.

What does the course involve?

Throughout the first year, students learn how writers write and the role which Comedy plays in Drama. In Year 13 we examine the genre of Gothic Literature as well as studying coursework texts of the pupil’s own choice.

Students will be expected to read from a wide selection of texts, including work by:

  • Samuel Taylor Coleridge
  • Jane Austen
  • Oscar Wilde
  • Christina Rossetti
  • Thomas Hardy
  • Ian McEwan
  • Christopher Marlowe

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade B or above in English Language and Literature.
