Plumbing Level 2 Diploma at Exeter College

Course description

On this programme you will study for a C&G 7202 Level 1 Diploma focussing on the fundamental practical skills and knowledge required to progress to a plumbing Apprenticeship which would be the main progression route. The course consists of formal classroom based theory and practical sessions in the workshop. In the workshops you will build up competence in carrying out practical exercises.

Course content

You will focus on different areas learning key plumbing principles and developing hand skills and techniques. Within this course you will be required to demonstrate safe working practices. If you do not already have grade C or above in English and maths you will study GCSE and Functional Skills in English and maths.

Units will cover:

  • structure of the construction industry
  • fundamental safe working practices
  • site preparation for working in the construction industry
  • above ground drainage
  • copper pipework
  • plastic pressure pipework
  • low carbon steel pipework
  • installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems
  • plumbing science
  • environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings  

Entry requirements

You need four GCSEs at Grade E (including maths and English). However, as the main progression route is to an Apprenticeship or Level 2 course, higher GCSE results would be a distinct advantage. You will be required to demonstrate that you have a high degree of enthusiasm and the commitment to succeed.

Assessment

You will be assessed through online exams and practical exercises.

Financial information

You will need to be equipped with basic stationery for all your sessions. You will need to have your own overalls and safety boots- advice will be given at interview. If you are required to purchase a subject specific course book you will be advised either at interview or at the start of the course.  There is a non-refundable Workshop Fee of £45 per full time student per year. This will contribute towards the cost of tools for use in the workshop so that you do not need to provide your own. It will also cover the cost of one Hi-Viz jacket, one pair of safety glasses, one pair of gloves and the exam fee for one CSCS test. 

Future opportunities

You can apply to do an Apprenticeship, training with the college part-time alongside a work placement.
