Course description

The AS course will enable you to develop a social understanding and knowledge of geographical issues, and to develop and use geographical skills. The course involves the study of traditional geography through a series of modules separating the physical and human components, and examines the interaction of people and the environment. The course has a scientific and mathematical content.

Course content

In the AS units you will learn about:

* Global Challenge (Unit 1). This unit poses questions which seek to explore the meaning, causes and impacts of a number of headline global issues such as natural hazards, climate change & global warming. This unit is worth 60% of the AS course

* Geographical Investigations (Unit 2). This unit takes a closer look at how physical and human issues influence lives including Extreme weather and Re-branding Places. There is a compulsory element of fieldwork in this Module. Fieldwork provides the opportunity to collect primary and secondary data to enhance geographical investigations. The fieldwork is carried out over three days in Shrewsbury,

Shropshire through the Field Studies Council. This unit is worth 40% of the AS course.

In the A2 units you will learn about:

Contested Planet (Unit 3). This unit looks at the use and management of resources being a key issue for Geography and today's world. Topics include energy, water and technological fixes. This unit is worth 60% of the A2 course.

Geographical Research (Unit 4). Options range from those with a strong physical geography focus, to those concerned more with environmental, social and cultural geographies. Options include 'Tectonic Activity and Hazards' and 'Pollution and Human Health at Risk'.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grades A*- C (or equivalent) which might include GCSE Geography, Maths and English.

Assessment

Unit 1: 1 hour AS examination taken in January

Unit 2: 1 hour AS examination taken in June

Unit 3: 2 hour A2 examination taken in January

Unit 4: 1 hour A2 examination June

Future opportunities

Employment, Higher Education or further study for a Professional Qualification.
