Product Design (Graphics with Materials Technology) at The Arnewood School

Course description

The course is designed to encourage students to take a broad view of Design and Technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacturing and marketing.

Course content

  • Unit 1 Product Development

Unit 1 is the ‘Design and make’ activity. Students select their own context, from which they must design and make a product that meets the original context/need.

  • Unit 2 Knowledge and Understanding of Product Design

This unit is based primarily on Materials and Components. Students will work with a variety of materials to enable them to understand characteristics, physical properties, cost and availability which influence the choice of materials in a design situation.

  • Unit 3 Further Study of Product Design

This unit enables students to further develop their knowledge and understanding of materials and components, design and market influences and processes and manufacture.

  • Unit 4 Commercial Product Development

This is a design and make unit where knowledge is applied to the design and manufacture of the students own project

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above is preferred, which must include an appropriate technology subject.


  • Unit 1 Coursework Approx 50 hours Weighting =25% (50% AS)
  • Unit 2 Two hour written examination taken in June. Weighting = 25% (50% AS)
  • Unit 3 Two hour examination taken in June of the second year. Weighting = 25% (50% A2)
  • Unit 4 Coursework Approx 60 hours Weighting 25% (50% A2)

Future opportunities

Design and Technology develops a range of skills and approaches. As a result there are a wide range of career opportunities open to students, including Architecture, Graphic Design, Product design and Industrial Design.

Further information

Students are supplied with Advanced Design and Technology for Edexcel – Product Design: Graphics with materials technology. They will be expected to keep abreast of technology advancements including design trends through quality newspapers and magazines, reference materials and appropriate documentaries.
