Business Studies AS/A-Level at Ravens Wood School
The best thing about business is the degree to which it is rooted in the real world. You probably began studying business more than a decade ago; the first time you bought something in a shop, the first time you reacted to an advertisement or the first time you counted your pocket money. You already have a lot of the knowledge and this course will bring it out of you. This is a very useful A level. It is a challenging academic subject that demands rigorous intellectual study and the rewards for your endeavours can be huge, both in terms of academic achievement and your rounded and composed view of society.
A big focus on this course is decision making. This means understanding the content and then applying it. You will learn to be ready for decisions about marketing, finance and accounting, human resources and operations management, and evaluate your decisions against the backdrop of the current economic outlook and a range of business issues and constraints. You will need to be able to read and understand, to write clearly and effectively and to answer business Maths questions with confidence and accuracy.
B or above in English Language or Literature and B in Maths.
Students who sit AS at the end of Year 12 will sit two two-hour examinations and those who continue to A level will sit three two-hour examinations at the end of Year 13. There is no coursework option in Business A level, and students who prefer to gain qualifications through coursework-based courses should consider the BTEC Business option, details of which are also in this prospectus.
Most Ravens Wood Sixth Form students go on to university. Business A level is a sound preparation for all degree courses, as there are many transferable skills that help with other subjects. There are more than 3,000 business-based courses available in British universities and reports recently suggest that this will only grow. Those of you that decide to go straight into employment will have learnt much from Business A level about the working world, and this will give you - from day one - a better understanding of your first job.
