A Level Product Design at Great Sankey High School

Course description

Product Design 3D is a thriving and popular subject at all levels of study and the work within the college compliments that carried out in the school. The work is demanding both academically and practically but the balance can develop a range of skills.

Course content

AS Level

Unit 1 - Materials, Components and Application

Unit 2 - Learning Through Designing and Making (Coursework)

A2 Level

Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture

Unit 4 - Design and Making Practice (Coursework)

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum of 5 A* - C grades at GCSE to study this course and students should also have successfully studied a Design and Technology subject at GCSE level to at least B grade or GCSE. You will need to be self-motivated and interested in the design and manufacture of products. You will also need to be able to design and make various projects using the influence of designers and design styles


AS - Unit 1 is worth 50% and Unit 2 50% of the AS Grade

A2 - Unit 3 is worth 50% and Unit 4 50% of the A2 Grade

Future opportunities

AS and A Level Product Design are seen as acceptable qualifications for entry to all levels of Higher Education. There are many career opportunities available depending on your individual choice. You may want to go to university to study an aspect of Engineering; Product Design along with a Maths and Physics A Level will qualify you to do so. If you prefer to study the Arts, then by studying Product Design and an Art A Level you could go on to take further qualifications to become for instance a Graphic Designer. You can also go onto an apprenticeship using the skills gained when completing a qualification in Product Design.
