Geography AS Level AQA at Longdean School

Course description

Aims:

  • To develop your ideas, skills and knowledge studied at GCSE Geography
  • To develop fieldwork skills and study geographical issues and impacts
  • To develop your awareness of the interaction between people and their natural environment
  • To provide you with a relevant, topical and stimulating area of study
  • To develop your general skills of description, analysis, interpretation and explanation.

Unit 1: Physical and Human Geography Rivers: floods and management; cold environments; coastal environments; hot desert environments and their margins; global population change; food supply issues; energy issues; health issues

You will study both core topics and two others.

Unit 2: Applied Geography Basic: investigative; ICT; graphical; cartographical and statistical skills; research and field work skills

 

Entry requirements

At least a grade B in GCSE English, Maths and Geography, with at least 5 A*-C grades altogether.

Assessment

How is the course examined or assessed? Unit 1 is a 2 hour written paper. Candidates answer 4 structured short and extended questions - 2 physical and 2 human (35% of A level) Unit 2 is a 1 hour written and structured skills, research and fieldwork paper (15% of A level)

Both of these papers will be taken in June.

Future opportunities

Geography A level is accepted and indeed welcomed by Universities for gaining entry to virtually any degree course. Geography graduates have better than average employment prospects and a great flexibility in their choice of career, due to the wide range of skills taught and learned throughout the course (such as analytical and evaluative skills).You will follow this course with two or three other AS levels or an Advanced diploma and, additionally, the compulsory core such as PSHE, RE, PE/Games. You can carry on to do A2 Geography.
