Dance AS/A2 Level at The Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

AS Level and A2 Level Dance helps students to combine their interest in dance and performance with the study of the dancer in action and the works of professional repertoire.

Students enjoy the benefits of a syllabus in which performance and choreography areemphasised. The course focuses on classical, contemporary and jazz dance techniques.

Students will be taught physical and performance skills, safe practice, dance composition, appreciation and analysis through both practice and theory.

Course content

Unit 1 Understanding Dance

Study focuses on three areas:

  • The dancer as a performer
  • The process and craft of choreography
  • The significance of dances

Unit 2 Choreography and Performance

The practical application of the knowledge and skills required to:

  • Choreograph and perform a solo dance
  • Perform in a duo/trio

Unit 3 Dance Appreciation: Content and Context

The study and development of dance through an appreciation of context, stylistic features, practitioners and their works

Unit 4 Group Choreography and Solo Performance

The practical application of the knowledge and skills required to:

  •  Prepare and present group work for performance
  • Perform a solo reflecting the style of a specific practitioner

Entry requirements

 

In addition to study this subject you must have enthusiasm and some dance experience. GCSE Dance is an advantage but not essential.
