Childcare - BTEC First Certificate in Children's Play, Learning and Development level 2 at Kirklees College, Dewsbury Centre

Course description

This course will provide you with a good understanding of how children develop and learn and the role of the childcare practitioner in supporting this development. It prepares you to progress to the level 3 qualification which will grant you full professional status.

Course content

On the course you will cover many interesting and relevant topics, including:

You will study the following 2 core units:

Patterns of Child Development

In this unit you will

  • Understand growth and development in children
  • Understand the characteristics of children’s development from birth up to
  • eight years
  • Understand how adults in early years settings can support children’s development.

Promoting Children's Development

In this unit you will:

  • Understand how play promotes children’s development in early years settings
  • Understand how different play opportunities promote children’s development
  • Understand how play is structured in early years settings to promote children’s development.

You will study the following 2 mandatory units:

The Principles of Early Years Practice

In this unit you will:

  • Understand the importance of inclusive practice in early years
  • Explore ways in which early years settings implement inclusive practice
  • Understand how children are empowered in early years settings
  • Understand the importance of the key person approach in supporting children’s development.

Promoting Children's Positive Behaviour

In this unit you will:

  • Understand factors that affect children’s behaviour
  • Understand how adults in early years settings promote children’s positive behaviour
  • Understand how adults support children’s behaviour in early years settings.

You will also study from the following optional units:

  • Health and Safety in Early Years Settings
  • Supporting Children's Language and Literacy Development
  • Making Healthy Food Choices for Children
  • Introduction to Working in the Early Years Sector

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades: English 3 and maths at 2 or above, and 2 other GCSEs grade 3 or above. You will require a DBS check for this course.


You will be continually assessed through written assignments and satisfactory competence in placement.

Financial information

As a full time student you should not need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19).

There may be a cost for equipment, educational visits, printing etc.

Future opportunities

CACHE Children and Young People's Workforce Diploma level 3.

You could enter employment as a nursery assistant in a wide range of settings or crèche worker.
