ICT and Computing AS level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
ICT & Computing encourages students to become discerning users of ICT. It allows them to develop a broad range of higher order skills, knowledge and understanding in information handling, computer use and computer related technology. The focus is equally divided into practical skills and theory knowledge.
Unit 1: Information Systems
(60% of total AS marks)
This looks at the different aspects of information & data, characteristics of software, spreadsheet & database concepts and the role and uses & impact of ICT - legal, moral and social issues.
Unit 2: Presenting Information Tasks
(40% of total AS marks)
Students complete a number of tasks using communication software packages such as DTP, PowerPoint & Word. The tasks cover different aspects of the System lfie cycle: Design, Development, Testing and Documentation.
A minimum of a C grade GCSE (or equivalent) is required to gain entry for the AS ICT & Computing course.
The ideal student for these units will be interested in Information, Communication and Technology and its use in the real world.
Good analytical skills are an advantage as is a patient and methodical approach to project work.
The examinations test knowledge, understanding and application.
A good grade in these examinations will open a range of possibilites. Universities and Colleges offer a wide variety of software and hardware based third level qualifications including HNC / HND and ordinary/honours desgrees.
Apprenticeships are also an option which can lead to a well-paid job in Industry, Retail or as a System Analyst or Network Specialist.
