CAA or City & Guilds Level 1 Construction Diploma (Carpentry/Joinery) at Newcastle-under-Lyme College

Course description

This course will provide you with a good introduction to Carpentry and Joinery and you will also learn about general construction skills. You will develop practical skills in this trade and once you have completed the Level 1 Diploma you will then progress onto either the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry or the Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery. You will learn about basic issues relating to construction including working safely, handling & storing resources, your responsibilities at work, communication skills and your will develop your personal effectiveness skills to enable you to progress to further training or employment.

As part of your study programme here at the College alongside your chosen course you will complete a maths and/or English qualification if you have not already achieved a grade C (5) or above. (This will be a GCSE for all students with a grade D (4).

The study programme will also incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery, but applicants must demonstrate a keen interest and enjoy working as part of a team.

Assessment

You will be assessed by the use of practical assessments and assignments that will form part of a portfolio of your work. You will also complete practical and theory tests at the end of your training course.

Financial information

Newcastle Maintenance Allowance (NMA): Anyone with a household income under £21,000 can receive £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances.

Future opportunities

Having completed the course, you will be well prepared to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry or the Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery. If you prefer to move into employment, you may be able to become an apprentice with a local company where you would work on site for four days per week but continue your learning at College one day a week.

Further information

You will spend a large amount of your time developing your practical skills by completing a range of practical projects in our workshops. You will also have classroom-based and computer-based learning resources that you will use to develop your understanding of the tools, materials and technologies used in your trade. You will be expected to complete work outside your main classes. As part of your course, you will visit construction companies to find out more about real-life construction in a range of settings. There may also be opportunities to undertake work experience as part of the course.
