English Language and Literature at North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College
The study of English Language and Literature is for those students with a love of reading, language and the communication of ideas. You should be someone who loves reading, of any kind!
The study of English Language and Literature will provide you with excellent written and verbal language and communication skills, the ability to analyse and interpret complex ideas and thoughts and give you the confidence and ability to express your own ideas and concepts.
You will explore many examples of prose – novels, formal and informal speech, newspapers as well as different readers and audiences. You will do your own original writing and study literary texts including Shakespeare. Group discussion forms a large part of this course, and you will have plenty of scope for your own creative work.
The course includes:
- Exploring novels, poems and drama to inspire your own creative writing
- The close study of one novel
- The study of spoken language.
English Language and Literature students develop excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to present ideas, analytical and investigative skills and individual study and research skills.
You will need 5 A*-C GCSEs, including a grade C in English Language GCSE.
This course will link well with many of the other subjects you can study at NSETC.
You could go onto university to study English Language or Literature at degree level, or another related subject.
Skills developed through the study of English Language and Literature can be relevant for many areas of employment including law, politics, business, advertising, media and teaching.
