GCSE Maths at North Shropshire College - NSC

Course description

This is a course designed for post 16 students who wish to gain a minimum Grade C GCSE qualification in Mathematics to support further education and career choices.

Is this course for me?

The course is most suitable for school-leavers wishing to convert a grade D into grade C and, more generally, for mature students with possibly a wider range of prior achievement.

It is ESSENTIAL that students would have achieved a grade “D” previously, in order to embark on a GCSE course.

You will need to be motivated, have a positive attitude towards your abilities and able to work independently.

If in doubt please enquire, and the college will be pleased to offer advice.

How many hours, weeks, years does it last?

3 hours per week (day class) for 35 weeks.

This class is also available as a twilight session (2 and a half hours a week).  Please call reception for day/time 01691 688000).

What do I need to bring with me? Mentally: A positive attitude towards the subject and your ability to learn and succeed.

Physically: It is essential that students take responsibility for providing their own resources, which will include:  ruler, protractor, compass, pens and pencils

Calculator (use of mobile phones will not be accepted).

If Higher level is to be attempted this will need to be a scientific calculator (that is, one having the functions sin, cos and tan)

How can I prepare myself before the course begins?

Practice using number skills – mentally estimate the cost of the items in your basket at the shop – try to accurately work out how much change you are due when the actual price is shown on the register.

Make sure your times-tables are in tip top condition – this is the backbone of a strong GCSE candidate.

How can I prepare myself before the course begins?

Students will find it useful to brush up on their non‑calculator arithmetic.
