BTEC LEVEL 3 NATIONAL EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE at Valley Park School
The BTEC level 3 National is a practical, work related course that will provide you with an introduction to working in the Applied Science and allied industries. The requirements of the qualification will mean that you develop the transferable skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, when studying Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills, you will develop skills including how to plan investigations and how to collect, analyse, present data and then communicate results.
The two year qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to give a coherent introduction to study of the Applied Science sector. In addition, the qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses. The BTEC can be taken as part of a diverse programme, leaving progression options fully open. It can also give context to subjects which would benefit from some scientific background such as Geography. The BTEC in Applied Science could be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other level 3 qualifications such as Sport, Health & Social Care, Engineering or Mathematics.
Grade B or above in a GCSE Science. Grade Merit or above in BTEC Science. GCSE English or Mathematics at Grade 5
The course is unit based and each unit is given a credit value depending on the guided learning hours. Assessment is through external
examination and the building of portfolios. All units which are internally assessed are also externally verified by Edexcel. For internally
assessed units you will receive an assignment brief detailing the tasks and criteria to be met. At the end of each unit you will be given
a grade of pass, merit or distinction with written feedback about how to progress to the next level. Portfolios can be tailored towards
different care providers based on your personal area of choice. Before the production of each portfolio we will give you all the necessary
information, but the grade you obtain will be dependent on the quality of work you produce.
