Music A-Level at Diss High School

Course description

The Music A-Level course gives students the opportunity to develop their own particular musical interests and strengths alongside rigorous study of interpretive, historical and analytical aspects of musical genres as diverse as the Renaissance, Romanticism, Film Music, Jazz, pop music and the 20th Century Musical.

Students will also have the opportunity to develop their skills in the handling of Music Technology, both as a tool and as a performing and composing medium in its own right.

Course content

The course is taught with an emphasis on practical music making and students will be encouraged to take an active role in the busy musical life of the School and in the local community.

The course content is organised around three areas of study: The Expressive use of Instrumental Techniques; Words and Music; Tonality.

Students will take 3 units in the lower sixth – Performing, Composing and Historical Study, and three further units with the same titles, in the Upper Sixth which build on the foundations laid in the Lower Sixth.

The course will appeal to anyone wishing to pursue musical studies at a music conservatoire or university, gain access to a range of music related employment or simply extent their musical understanding and experience of music for its intrinsic value and interest. 

Entry requirements

You are required to have at least five Cs at GCSE including Maths and English Language at Grade C.
