Computing Diploma Level 2 at Gloucestershire College

Course description

This course gives you the opportunity to learn about the computing industry and the opportunity to develop essential computing skills.

Your studies will include: • Computer systems • End-user support • Software development • Graphics and web development.

Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology is broadly equivalent to studying four GCSEs at grades A* - C.

As such it is a good vocational choice for those students who have an interest in technical IT but who have not achieved suitable GCSE grades to start on our suite of National Diploma courses.

The Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology gives a firm foundation in all IT disciplines.

Course content

Over the year you will study 6 units:

  • Communicating in the IT Industry (half unit) - working in IT requires good communication skills whether this is verbally delivery or traditionally written. Working in the IT Industry (half unit) - learning about the roles and responsibilities of being successfully employed in the IT industry
  • Computer Systems - investigating in practical terms how hardware and software combine to create a working computer system
  • Installing Computer Hardware - teaching you how to plan and safely install or upgrade computer hardware
  • Installing Computer Software - teaching you how to plan and safely install or upgrade computer software
  • Website Development - showing you how to plan and build effective websites of your very own!
  • Software Design - giving you the skills to design and create working programmes in a popular professional programming language (Microsoft Visual Basic .NET)

Entry requirements

  • You need to have successfully achieved 4 GCSEs at A* - D including English at grade C and Maths at D or higher, or successfully completed a Level 1 Diploma in IT or Computing with functional skills.
  • Selection is dependent upon a successful interview, homework, completion of a 2-day selection event and a positive reference.

Assessment

Typically, Level 2 Diploma programmes have few formal exams, preferring to test your knowledge and understanding through a mixture of vocationally relevant assignments and projects.

Assignments usually involve a high-degree of practical work although some will require you to complete background research before starting the task.

Most assignments will involve you doing work outside scheduled classes although your lecturers are fully committed to give you support when you need it.

Financial information

Students should bring a pen to the first class and a bag capable of securely carrying folders, paper, books etc.

A USB memory stick will be provided during induction - you’ll be charged a fee for materials like this at enrolment.

You’ll register with the examination board (Edexcel) during October, but students under the age of 19 at the start of the programme will not have to pay this fee.

You will have the opportunity to attend one or more course related day trips or activities during the year, again a fee will be charged for this at enrolment.

Future opportunities

Upon completion, you may be able to move on to a Level 3 Diploma in a computing specialism. Alternatively, you may be able to move on to an apprenticeship or employment.
