Course description

Are you interested in sport, outdoor activities, leisure and public services? Would you like to pursue a career in these areas? This course allows you to study a combination of both Public Services and Sport, gaining a valuable insight into the sport and public service sectors. It is suitable for students looking to progress onto further study, as well as those who like practical sporting and public service activities.

Course content

During your course you will study a variety of units which may include;

Introduction to Expedition Skills
In this unit learners will be introduced to the basics of planning and carrying out a full day expedition

Map Reading Using Ordnance Survey Maps
This unit will enable learners to become familiar with Ordnance Survey maps and to apply the concepts to practical situations.

Taking Part in Exercise and Fitness
The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to find out about exercise and fitness activities in their local area and participate in a range of different exercise and fitness classes

Taking Part in Sport
The aim of this unit is for learners to participate in a range of different types of sports so that they can gain experience in the necessary skills and requirements.

Planning Own Fitness Programme
The aim of this unit is for learners to learn the different components of fitness and how to train each component in order to improve personal fitness

Planning and Participating in an Event
This unit aims to give learners the opportunity to work as a team in planning, participating in and reviewing an event

Developing personal skills for leadership
The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the importance of leadership skills. The focus of the unit is on developing their own leadership skills and practicing these skills in readiness for employment in the public services.

How the Body Works
This unit aims to provide learners with knowledge of the structure and functions of the skeleton, muscular system and cardio-respiratory systems.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade E or above, including maths and English or equivalent, a satisfactory interview, a good reference.


Students will be expected to study in between timetabled sessions in order to complete course work. It will also be necessary for students to undertake assessment work tasks at home and during free time.

There are no formal exams for the Diploma. Assessment is continuous throughout the year and consists of a variety of theory and practical tasks, including written reports, presentations and observations.

Learners will also be required to complete their Functional Skills in maths and English.

Work Experience is included in the study programme and will provide you with an insight into the different sectors for future employment.

Future opportunities

Completion of this course will develop the required knowledge and confidence to progress onto a Level 2 qualification at Wiltshire College. You could progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Public Services or BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport.
