Year 12

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in physics : Practical skills assessed in a written examination.
  • Module 2 – Foundations of physics : Physical quantities and units; Making measurements and analysing data; Nature of quantities.
  • Module 3 – Forces and motion : Motion ; Forces in action; Work, energy and power; Materials; Momentum.
  • Module 4 – Electrons, waves and photons : Charge and current; Energy, power and resistance; Electrical circuits; Waves; Quantum physics.

Year 13

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in physics : Practical skills assessed in a written examination.
  • Module 2 – Foundations of physics : Physical quantities and units; Making measurements and analysing data; Nature of quantities.
  • Module 3 – Forces and motion : Motion; Forces in action; Work, energy and power; Materials; Momentum.
  • Module 4 – Electrons, waves and photons : Charge and current; Energy, power and resistance; Electrical circuits; Waves; Quantum physics.
  • Module 5 – Newtonian world and astrophysics : Thermal physics; Circular motion; Oscillations; Gravitational fields; Astrophysics and cosmology.
  • Module 6 – Particles and medical physics : Capacitors; Electric fields; Electromagnetism; Nuclear and particle physics; Medical imaging.

Entry requirements

A in Physics or Additional Science and Maths

Assessment

AS

Breadth in physics (01) 70 marks 1 hour 30 minutes written paper, 50% of total AS level. 20 marks = Section A (contains multiple choice questions). 50 marks = Section B includes short answer question styles (structured questions, problem solving, calculations, practical).

Depth in physics (02) 70 marks 1 hour 30 minutes written paper, 50% of total AS level. Question styles include short answer (structured questions, problem solving, calculations, practical) and extended response questions.

Modelling physics (01)

(Modules 1, 2, 3 and 5) 100 marks 2 hours 15 minutes written paper, 37% of total A level Exploring physics (02)

(Modules 1, 2, 4 and 6) 100 marks 2 hours 15 minutes written paper, 37% of total A level

Unified physics (03) (all modules (1 to 6)) 70 marks 1 hour 30 minutes written paper, 26% of total A level

Practical endorsement in physics (04) (non-exam assessment - reported separately)
